As part of its mission to support Minnesota credit unions’ efforts to provide financial education
programs and encourage full-family involvement, the FIC has research a variety of organizations
dedicated to providing financial literacy resources and services. Below is an overview of several local
 and national organizations committed to teaching individuals about financial topics.

    This site provides a plethora of financial tips, tools and resources. Consumers can investigate a variety of financial topics, discover how to manage their personal finances through life changes, and ask questions to Dr. Money.

Best Prep

Best Prep is a statewide non-profit organization with a mission to best prepare Minnesota students with business career and financial literacy skills through experiences that inspire success in work and life.

Biz Kid$

Biz Kid$ is an organization devoted to teaching kids about money. Through the use of a TV series, web site, and other social media tools, Biz Kid$ is focused on equipping kids with the tools to make and manage money.

  • Biz Kid$ TV Series
    Similar to Bill Nye the Science Guy, this PBS series teaches kids about money in a fun, entertaining and interactive way.

  • Resources for Kids
    This page provides kids access to savings calculators, games, and information on a variety of financial topics ranging from how to start a business to safe ways to use a credit card.

  • Resources for Teachers
    This page provides resources that coincide with the Biz Kid$ shows. Teachers can access lesson plans to use in conjunction with Biz Kid$ videos, and parents can download family activity worksheets and conversation starters.

Cooperative Network

The Cooperative Network provides support, services and resources to its 600 member-cooperatives in Minnesota and Wisconsin. They pursue a variety of legislative initiatives and educate the public about the purpose and role of cooperatives.

  • Minnesota Youth Leadership Conference
    The Cooperative Network hosts this annual conference to help young people develop an understanding and appreciation of the purpose, operation, and scope of cooperative businesses. Students learn about a variety of topics, including financial education.

Credit Union National Association (CUNA) is the premier national trade association serving America's credit unions. CUNA provides many services to credit unions, including representation, information, public relations, continuing professional education, and business development.

    Describes the credit union philosophy and explains what makes credit unions unique. The site also provides a variety of financial resources

    Provides credit unions a variety of materials and resources they can use for teaching financial literacy to members.

Federal Reserve Board

As a central bank of the United States, the Federal Reserve works to provide the nation with a safer, more stable monetary and financial system. One of its initiatives is to educate consumers on how to make wise financial choices.

  • Consumers Guide to Credit Cards
    This site provides consumers in-depth information about how to wisely navigate the credit card process. Interactive tools help consumers understand their credit card statement, comprehend the terms and conditions they’ve agreed to, and payoff their balance.

  • Federal Reserve Education
    The federal reserve provides a variety of financial education materials on this site. It offers a search tool that filters through several interactive tools for teachers, students and parents.

Junior Achievement (JA)

Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. JA’s unique approach allows volunteers from the community to teach curriculum while sharing their experiences with students.

LSS Financial Counseling Service

LSS Financial Counseling Service has offered credit counseling services since 1987 and is one of the largest providers of full-service, community-based financial counseling in Minnesota. Their financial counselors are trained to work with all people, including those who are facing financial crisis. They have offices statewide and also serve the country by phone and online counseling services.

Michigan Financial Education Council

The Financial Education Council (FEC) is composed of credit union volunteers who work to expand credit union commitment to financial literacy and education. As a committee, they assist credit unions with classroom presentations, student branching, credit union youth programs, and adult financial education. The FEC has a variety of resources to offer credit unions including:

  • Financial Lessons in a Box
    These kits provide credit unions with time-tested financial literacy presentations. Each lesson includes an overview of the subject matter, the recommended age or grade, presentation detail and necessary materials.

  • Student Credit Union Handbook
    These resources provides a how-to guide for establishing, running and marketing a in-school credit union branch.

  • Youth Loan Manual
    This manual evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of youth lending, along with compliance and legal issues that must be considered. It also offers credit unions tips on developing a youth lending program, writing policies and procedures, and marketing the lending program.

Michigan Credit Union League

The Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL) offers credit unions resources to help them enrich the financial lives of their members and community members. The Michigan’s Adult Financial Education department offers ideas and resources for financial education, along with education seminar. Specific resources available to credit unions include:

    These free seminars contain PowerPoint presentations, complete speakers notes, member handouts and suggested activities.

  • Right at Home Answers
    This web site provides answers to credit union members’ questions about mortgages, foreclosures and home ownership.

Minnesota Jump$tart Coalition

The Minnesota Jump$tart Coalition is a group that works to bring individuals and organizations together to improve the personal financial literacy of Minnesota’s youth. The group works to support organizations and individuals who promote financial literacy.

    This database of information provides personal finance resources from a variety of education providers, including government, business and non-profit organizations. This listing of materials provides information on where credit unions can obtain these financial education resources.

National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE)

The National Youth Involvement Board serves as a resource for the credit union movement. They promotes the value of financial literacy, youth services, and leadership development within the credit union movement. The NYIB provides a platform for sharing youth marketing materials and ideas, encourages commitment to advancing youth financial literacy, and provides an educational conference in keeping with the NYIB mission.

National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE)

The National Endowment for Financial Education is a non-profit foundation dedicated to helping all Americans acquire the information and gain the skills necessary to take control of their personal finances. This organization exists to generate and provide financial education to our youth and underserved individuals.

University of Minnesota Extension

The University of Minnesota Extension program is devoted to taking university research and education to the people of Minnesota. This network of education and researcher is organized to provide resources on a variety of topics and issues, including financial education.

  • Dollar Works 2
    Dollar Works 2 is a comprehensive personal financial education program. The easy-to-use tools help move learners from practicing “concepts” to application in their own lives. Along with offering this curriculum, U of M extension staff can provide your credit union a brief or in-depth overview on how to use Dollar Works 2.

  • Youth & Money
    This section of the University of Minnesota Extension web site provides resources to help strengthen individual and family financial literacy. Access 4-H curriculum, teaching strategies, workshops and more.

  • Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Plate
    This guide provides individuals assistance on passing on personal possessions to loved ones. The material overviews how to be fair, managing conflict, distribution options and more.

    This site discusses financial literacy and provides resources for kids, teen, and adults.

  • FamilyMint.com
    FamilyMint is a budgeting and goal-setting tool where kids learn by actually managing their own money in a safe, virtual environment. It is the modern replacement for the piggybank, as well as an introduction to online banking. It is designed to start forming the right financial behaviors in an interactive, fun and simple way while emphasizing the importance of saving, setting and achieving goals.
